What should I do when…?
There is an orange point where the tree is
This means that you have found a tree that has been detected by satellite imagery. When dropping your tree point on the map, place the point on top of the orange dot to confirm that this is in fact a tree. The orange point will then turn green once you submit the survey.
There’s a green point where the tree is
This means that someone else has submitted information for this tree. You can view the information that has been submitted for this tree on the online map. If you wish to write a letter to this tree, you may do this via the Letter to the Tree survey instead.
If there isn’t a tree where the green point is, you are welcome to submit a new record for this location to update it and turn the green point to red.
There’s a red point where the tree is
This means that someone else has submitted information at this location that a tree is either dead or there is a feature (such as a tree stump or streetlight) that has been misidentified as a tree.
If there is a tree here, and you wish to provide updated information about it, you are welcome to submit a new entry and turn the red point to green.
There are green diagonal lines where the tree is
This means that this location has been identified to be a woodland, so there is already information available about the trees in this area. This tree canopy survey is focused on recording information about urban trees (trees on streets, in your garden, in parks etc.), for which there isn’t much data or knowledge. So, if the tree is within one of these areas you do not need to record information about it.
You may, however, write this tree a letter using the Letter to the Tree Survey.
I’m not sure what species the tree is
Yes! There are lots of resources available to help with tree species identification such as the Woodland Trust website and Tree ID apps. If you are still unsure, the species identification confidence question is there to capture your confidence level, which can be from 0% to 100%.
Technical Issues
When I click on the QR button, the camera doesn’t load.
Make sure you have camera access enabled on your device. The easiest way to reset this if it isn’t working is to uninstall the app and reinstall it. If the issue persists, you may need to enable access to the camera from your device’s settings.
The map isn’t loading on my app
Sometimes the map takes a bit of time to load. Please ensure you have allowed app access to your device’s location services, and you are connected to the internet (either Wi-Fi or mobile data). If the map still doesn’t load, your device’s GPS coordinates will still be recorded you just won’t be able to see the map beneath.
If you feel confident to locate the tree on a map in the future, then you can continue filling out the rest of the survey and find the tree location at a later time when you are reconnected to the Internet.
