Hedgerows – green boundaries and routes

Hedgerows – green boundaries and routes

Event Information

When travelling through Scotland, we can see remnants of hedgerows—lines of trees or rows of declining hawthorn hedges. These old living boundaries largely disappeared from Scotland during the 20th century, but recently we have begun to see their slow return.

Hedgerow talk at Samhain

In this insightful talk, you will learn about the many benefits of hedgerows in landscapes and local gardens. The visual presentation will illustrate the rich biodiversity of healthy hedgerows and how they benefit our climate. You will also have an opportunity to learn about practical aspects of hedgerow assessment and to explore the hedgerows at Forgan Arts Centre during a garden walk that will follow the talk.

Speaker

Gosia Stanton, Community Development Officer at Fife Climate Hub and a former environmental researcher with an interest in biodiversity and rewilding. She has developed hedgerow training within FCCAN and supports community groups wishing to undertake hedgerow surveys in their communities.

Samhain Festival

Join us for an afternoon of Celtic celebration of Halloween, which marks the shifting season in a series of community-led and focused attractions. We welcome all to delve into hedges, edges and borders between worlds.

Festival attractions will include:

  • Imagine otherworldly creatures in a family-friendly workshop led by artist Aniara Omann
  • Join a lantern procession created by our Alternative (Art) School students with puppet designer Gretchen Maynard-Hahn
  • Explore liminal ecologies in the edges of our garden with ecologist Keith Skene
  • Peer over the hedge, and hear about seasonal land work and the migrants who do the work, with artist José García Oliva
  • Try locally-foraged hedgerow jams and cordials with folk historian Willow Mullins
  • Share a feast of flavours from the Greek Taverna, made with local produce by Marwick’s Vegan Kitchen

Important note: Samhain will include indoor and outdoor activities, so come prepared for the cool autumn weather.
