Winter fruit tree maintenance – Kirkcaldy

Winter fruit tree maintenance – Kirkcaldy

Event Information

Join Greener Kirkcaldy to learn about how they look after their orchard and how you can use that knowledge in your own green space.

Pruning apple and pear trees in winter encourages healthy, shapely growth and can significantly increase fruit production. Mulching increases the nutrients available in the soil, and boosts local biodiversity and soil aeration.

In this workshop we will cover:

  • The basics of tree structure and pruning theory
  • How to maintain both young and well-established trees
  • How to safely remove dead and diseased wood
  • Mulching and the many benefits of local soil health
  • Tool maintenance, sharpening and techniques
  • Troubleshooting Q+A for participants’ specific tree issues.

The workshop will start in our cosy cabin with some classroom learning about tree structures and pruning techniques, then we will move on to the orchard for a demonstration and the practical application of your newly-learned skills!

The workshop will be led by Greener Kirkcaldy’s Kit Cubitt who has years of experience caring for fruit trees and teaching others about them.

Please wear suitable outdoor clothing for the cold weather, plus some gardening gloves if you have them.

Tea, coffee and cake is included in the ticket price.

This is a social enterprise workshop. All profits go to supporting Greener Kirkcaldy's work in the community.
