Climate change is a recognised direct cause of migration, which has been evidenced by research of the last decades. This evidence is provided in both UK Government and independent studies. Mass migrations from war zones and countries affected by draught have become a major political issue that divides society.

Fife Climate Hub are celebrating a Refugee Week (16 – 22nd June) with the screening of Fremont directed by Babak Jalali to highlight the importance of social inclusion in our society. It is a moving and hilarious comedy-drama starring Anaita Wali Zada and The Bear’s Emmy award-winning Jeremy Allen White.

The story

Migrant’s life is a difficult path, often lonely and exposed to abuse. This film brings a story of a young migrant from Afghanistan to show how a person displaced from their home is trying to fit to a new life in a foreign country.

Donya, who moved to Fremont, California after serving as a translator for the American army, spends her days working at a fortune cookie factory and her nights wide awake battling between her desire to rebuild her life and the overbearing guilt she carries within. In a bid to connect with the world, she sends an unconventional message through a fortune cookie.

This poignant and touching story will bring you closer to problems faced by displaced people and help to understand how important it is for them to be accepted by society.
